About Us
On August 20, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Economic Opportunity Act which created a variety of programs, including Community Action Agencies, as part of his War on impoverishment. He knew then, as we know now, that this challenge must be won in the field, in every private home, in every public office, and from the courthouse to the White House.
Sunflower County Progress, Inc. was established on August 31, 1965, to wage the war on poverty on a personal level in Sunflower County by promoting self-sufficiency for those of limited income, by ensuring that all residents are able to live in dignity; by implementing innovative and cost-effective programs to improve the lives and living conditions of the impoverished; by providing support and instruction for everyone in need of assistance; and by being a major voice in the communities. On April 26, 1978, the name was changed to Sunflower-Humphreys Counties Progress, Inc. (SHCPI) to include Humphreys County to ensure individuals in Humphreys County were provided the same services as Sunflower County. Our community Action Agency changes people’s lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes Mississippi a better place to live. We care about the entire community, and we are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other.
SHCPI is a 501c3 nonprofit organization which currently serve over 15,000 clients annually through our USDA, AmeriCorp Seniors, CSBG/LIHEAP assistance, WIOA MYSTATUS, and Transportation services in Sunflower and Humphreys Counties. We also serve fifty-two adult and children daycare centers daily, and during the summer we serve at least twenty-seven feeding centers for children up to 18 years of age.
