
Senior Companions
The AmeriCorps Seniors Program (ACS). provides opportunities for volunteers 55 years and older to offer companionship and assistance to other seniors who have difficulty with daily living tasks such as light household chores. shopping or bill paying and more. The program aims to prevent loneliness and isolation. to keep seniors living independently longer and assist family caregivers.
The ACS program gives 55 and over seniors with limited income an opportunity to serve the communities of Bolivar. Humphreys. Washington. and Sunflower counties. They help meet critical community needs and provide high quality experiences that continue to enhance and enrich the lives of both the volunteers and the seniors they serve.
Volunteers provide in excess of 54.000 hours of assistance and friendships annually to elderly and homebound clients who generally live alone.

Eligibility to be Enrolled
To be enrolled as Senior Companion, individuals must be:
- 55 years of age or older;
- Able to serve 15-40 hours a week
- Medically qualified (based on a physical examination) to serve without detriment to themselves or others;
- Meet income guidelines set by CNCS, including income from all sources, which is reviewed annually
- Clear results from the criminal history & National Sex Offender Public Registry checks
- Willing to accept supervision; and
- Serve at a partner agency which has a current Memorandum of Understanding with the SCP
Eligibility to be a Senior Companion Program volunteer may not be restricted based on formal education, experience, citizenship, race, creed, belief, color, national origin, sex, handicap, or political affiliation, as protected by federal law.
*The stipend is non-taxable, non-reportable income that does not affect eligibility for other programs and services.
